Our Work in Moldova

Since 1994, generous American Catholics have provided hundreds of thousands of dollars for projects which were submitted to our office by the bishop of Moldova. These efforts have helped the Church in Moldova rebuild itself and begin to live and serve in freedom. The following are just a few examples of past, ongoing, and new projects sponsored through our office.

… Provided equipment and operating costs for new Catholic newspaper
We helped this important apostolate get off the ground by providing a computer, digital camera, tape recorder, fax machine, telephones, and basic operating costs.

…Provided equipment for the mass media center in Chisinau
The diocese uses the media center to promote its pastoral and social activities. It covers various religious events for the local TV channels, radio stations and newspapers.

… Purchased a van for a catechetical center
The van enables teachers to bring participants from different parishes to one, central location for catechetical courses and fellowship, strengthening the faithful and building community.

… Cover costs for clergy and religious to study Russian and Romanian
In Moldova, strong Russian language skills are crucial for working with the people. This course allows priests, nuns, and lay pastoral ministers to acquire this skill and better serve the Church. Request submitted: $9,600

… Give support to the Eucharistic Sisters in Moldova
The renewal of religious life and the restoration of the capacity of religious orders to serve the people is a priority for the bishops of Moldova. This project helps the Eucharistic Sisters cover the expenses of everyday operation and development. Request submitted: $50,000

… Support pastoral center activities in Chisinau
This project will allow the pastoral center to function and serve through local outreach programs. Request submitted: $12,000

… Fund the procurement of equipment and furnishings for diocesan offices in Chisinau
The diocesan offices can only perform their organizational and leadership role for the Church with the necessary means and equipment. This project ensures that the Chisinau diocese can fulfill their mission to the people. Request submitted: $80,000

… Help establish a pre-seminary for Moldovan clergy
In the aftermath of communism, the problem of Catholic formation is an ongoing challenge and a high priority for the bishops of Moldova. A good pre-seminary will provide personal and spiritual formation for future priests and will benefit the entire Church. Request submitted: $10,000

Support the vocational center in Chisinau
This center is headed by Fr. Benone, who obtained a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Catholic University of America through a grant from this office. The center serves the needs of faithful of various age groups. Some youngsters come here for after school activities, others take vocational training. There are retreats and formation conferences offered for youth and adults. The center serves as a meeting place for seminars and conferences for Catholic physicians and professors. Amount requested: $6,000.
