Our Work in Romania

Since 1991, generous American Catholics have provided millions of dollars for projects which were submitted to our office by the bishops of Romania. These efforts have helped the Church in Romania rebuild itself and begin to live and serve in freedom. The following are just a few examples of past, ongoing, and new projects sponsored through our office.

…Provided partial funding for construction of a seminary refectory, kitchen, and quarters for religious women serving St. Joseph seminary in Bacau
The seminary is preparing well over one hundred candidates for the priesthood. The new additions to the seminary building were essential for the proper functioning of the seminary.

… Participated in the construction of the Eastern-rite cathedral in Cluj
We have been and continue to be committed to helping Eastern-rite Catholics rebuild their communities according to their own traditions. Helping to erect this cathedral is part of a comprehensive effort to help the Eastern-rite Church rebuild in every way.

… Sponsored TeenSTAR teacher training and midwifery school
The TeenSTAR program (Teen Sexuality Teaching in the context of Adult Responsibility) helps to form Catholic youth in sexual morality and responsibility, and the midwifery school provides much-needed training for better care of new Catholic families.

Support a nursing home in Cluj-Napoca cared for by the Basilian Sisters
This nursing home is a service provided by the Eastern-rite religious women of St. Basil the Great. As the Church reclaims its role in a post-communist society, the social services traditionally provided by religious are of great importance.

… Support the renovation of the seminary building in Satu Mare
We are offering as much support as possible to give the Church the means to form and educate future priests to serve the Church in Romania. Continuation of renovation of seminary building in Satu Mare. Request submitted: $50,000

… Sponsor priests in higher studies at the Catholic University of America
This project supports two priests in their studies at the Catholic University of America. On completion of their studies, they will return to serve the Church in Romania and pass on what they have received. Request submitted: $36,000

… Assist with formation and education of the Poor Clare Sisters in Miercurea-Ciuc
We are assisting the Poor Clare Sisters as they form and train the next generation of their community. Request submitted: $12,000

… Contribute to the construction of a pastoral and social center in Sacuieni
Our support of the Church is always ordered to the call to mission and service. This center will enable the community in Sacuieni to do just that. Request submitted: $15,000

… Provide support for the seminarians at the Theological Institute of Alba Iulia
The education of seminarians is crucial to their formation as priests. This program of studies in Alba Iulia will do much to strengthen the process of formation. Request submitted: $35,000

…Support the seminary in Satu Mare
The diocese of Satu Mare encompasses sixty parishes, with the total number of priests at sixty two. Plentiful vocations ensure the continuous work of the Church in this part of the country. Amount requested: $50,000.

…Support construction of a church in Reghin
The construction of this parish church started in 1994. The parish serves the spiritual needs of almost five thousand Eastern-rite (Greek Catholic) faithful. At this time funds are still needed to put the finishing touches on this only Catholic church in Reghin. Amount requested: $80,000.
