Since 1992, generous American Catholics have supported over $1 million in projects which were submitted to our office by the bishops of Slovenia. These efforts have helped the Church in Slovenia rebuild itself and begin to live and serve in freedom. The following are just a few examples of past, ongoing, and new projects sponsored through our office.
With your help, we have …
…Supported the Loyola Community in its construction project and provided a four-year scholarship to one of the nuns
In order to support this community’s ministry to the Church in Slovenia, our office provided funding for the construction of a convent. Sr. Maria received a four-year scholarship to pursue biblical studies in Rome.
… Helped purchase network transmitters for Radio Ognisce in Ljubljana
Six new network transmitters ensured good coverage of the county and a wide program reach. Previously, their one transmitter could not be received in mountainous or distant regions.
… Contributed to the construction of a school for the Sacred Heart of Mary Congregation in Ljubljana
Rebuilding Catholic schools in Slovenia is a high priority for ecclesial renewal. This project marked another step forward for Catholic education in Ljubljana.
… and we continue to …
… Assist with the purchase of equipment and furniture for St. Stanislav's Diocesan High School
Our commitment to Catholic education means meeting the most practical needs, such as supplying classroom materials, desks, and chairs. Request submitted: $15,000
… Give support to a summer camp and pilgrimage for young Bosnians in Ljubljana
This project would support a well-rounded summer camp and pilgrimage for Bosnian youth in Slovenia and provide them with an educational, edifying, and fun experience. Request submitted: $8,500
… Support restoration of the Ursuline apostolate in Ljubljana
This project supports a new convent and school in Ljubljana. The Ursulines want to build and are hoping to staff an "Ursuline Institute For Education and Culture." The institute would have a preschool, student hostel, and primary school. Request submitted: $100,000
… Participate in funding "Pro-Life Week" in Ljubljana
Our assistance would assist with expenses and organization of “Pro-Life Week” in Ljubljana. Abortion is an especially difficult problem in Central and Eastern Europe, and Slovenia is no exception. Request submitted: $7,500
… Provide salaries and training for new staff of Radio Ognisce
We continue to support the radio in Ognisce, a 24 hour Catholic radio station that broadcasts to over 70% of the Slovenian people. New positions are needed in the editorial, news reporting, education, and children's programs. They can train and hire qualified people with our help. Request submitted: $100,000
We hope in the future to …
…Provide assistance to the Catholic elementary school in Stara Loka
The state law forbids religious education in public schools, therefore the Church needs to establish its own education system. Though there are a few Catholic kindergartens and high schools, there is not a single Catholic elementary school. Father Alojz of Stara Loka is trying to change that by opening the first such school in his parish. Amount requested: $100,000.
