History of the Church in Turkmenistan

Mission, 1; parish, 1; priests, 3 (rel.); hap., 10; Caths., 1,000; tot. pop., 4,840,000.

Former constituent republic of USSR; independent, 1991; capital, Ashgabat. Almost all the population is Sunni Muslim. The Vatican established diplomatic relations with the country in 1996 and set up a mission in 1997.
