Cardinal Law Urges Congress to Oppose Physician-Assisted Suicide

WASHINGTON (March 6, 1997) — In testimony today, Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston has urged the U.S.Congress to oppose physician-assisted suicide.

"We hope that Congress, in the months to come, will prevent federal funding for assisted suicide," the Cardinal said. "Congress should also explore ways to help make this practice unthinkable in our society, by protecting the equal dignity of all human life and promoting truly compassionate solutions for those who now lack adequate care when they are seriously ill."

Cardinal Law, Chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities, presented testimony to a hearing on ethical, legal and social issues in assisted suicide held by the House Commerce Subcommittee on Health and Environment.
