Auxiliary Bishop Named for Hartford

WASHINGTON, (March 18, 1997) -- Pope John Paul II has named Msgr. Christie A. Macaluso Titular Bishop of Grass Valley and Auxiliary Bishop of Hartford. Archbishop Agostino Cacciavillan, Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment.

Bishop-elect Macaluso is currently the Rector of the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford and episcopal vicar.

Christie A. Macaluso was born June 12, 1945, in Hartford, Connecticut.

He attended elementary and secondary schools in Hartford; St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Connecticut; and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He holds master's degrees in philosophy and psychology.

Bishop-elect Macaluso was ordained a priest on May 22, 1971, for the Archdiocese of Hartford. Following ordination, he served as a parochial vicar in West Hartford and in New Britain; professor at St. Thomas Seminary; and, for six years, as rector of the seminary.

He has been rector of the Cathedral of St. Joseph since 1991 and episcopal vicar for the Hartford Vicariate since 1995.

He was named a Prelate of Honor, with the title of monsignor, by Pope John Paul II in 1995.
