Conference Official Hails AMA Stand on Partial-Birth Abortion

WASHINGTON (May 19, 1997) -- The following is a statement of Helen Alvare of the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops on the occasion of the American Medical Association's decision to support the passage of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act.

"We are pleased that the American Medical Association (AMA) has today decided to support the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act. No longer are there any "medical" pretenses left with which to defend this horrible procedure. We urge Senators who have relied on these to abandon them and to cast a vote for ending partial-birth abortions in the nation."
