Positive Trends Show Gradual Movement Toward Respect for Life

WASHINGTON (January 15, 1999) -- Helen Alvare, an official of the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the pro-life movement has reason to be encouraged by information released today by the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARRAL). Her brief statement follows:

"The pro-life movement takes great encouragement from the figures released today by the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League. Taken together, the trends recorded by NARRAL show a nation which is moving gradually and democratically toward restoring sanity to our abortion debate. And not just legally, but culturally as well. NARRAL's president has herself remarked that abortion is increasingly stigmatized, and that citizens are increasingly electing pro-life majorities to state offices. This is just the sort of gradual movement which will eventually re-establish a national culture which respects the lives of the unborn, women and families."
