April Pitches

Earth Day 1999 Focuses on Upholding God's Will

Earth Day is observed on April 22. The theme is "Sustainable Living," with an emphasis on consumerism. For Christians, the goal of living simply is not just to consume less or become less busy. "It is taking the time to discern God's will for our lives looking at, for example, the use of resources in a just way that provides for the needs of all, particularly the poor, so that God is glorified," says Walt Grazer, Director of the U.S. Bishops' Environmental Justice Program.

Feast of St. Catherine of Siena

"Although she lived in the fourteenth century, Catherine of Siena was a woman for all ages: mystic and activist, counselor to popes and princes, peacemaker and caregiver," says Sheila Garcia, advisor to the U.S. Bishops on women's concerns. "Pope Paul VI recognized her influence when he named her a doctor of the Church, one of only three women to be so honored. In Catherine's life we see how God's love can empower and embolden us to achieve the unexpected." The Feast of St. Catherine of Siena is celebrated on April 29.

It's Spring! Bless Your Seeds, Gardens, and Fields!

In April, lush and blooming vistas remind us that it's spring, the seasonal reawakening of the earth. Christians, celebrate Easter and Pentecost in spring. "Blossoms, wild flowers, and greening of meadows and lawns are a reminder of God's beauty and graciousness," says Walt Grazer, Director of the U.S. Bishops' Environmental Justice Program. You can celebrate this joyous season with a blessing of seeds, fields and gardens.
