WASHINGTON (July 16, 1999) -- The National Conference of Catholic Bishops released registration options and fees for the XV World Youth Day, which is scheduled to take place in Rome, August 15-20, 2000. The registration process will be in two phases--initial registration taking place immediately, and a second phase to begin in the fall of 1999.
The cost for the entire WYD 2000 package, which includes food, lodging, transportation during the week, civil insurance, and the "pilgrims bag" (credentials and passes for all events) is approximately $170.00. There are several other packages available, down to the approximate $105.00 for those providing their own housing and food for most of the week. There are discounted fees for those who register and pay by the end of February, 2000.
The WYD 2000 theme is "The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us" (Jn 1: 14). The week will begin with a gathering of young people in St. Peter's Square on Tuesday, August 15. The next three days will be filled with activities, including Jubilee celebrations at the Vatican. Bishops from the United States will be among Church leaders who will conduct catechetical sessions throughout the week with the pilgrims. The week will end with an overnight vigil which leads into the closing Mass at Tor Vergata University, celebrated by the Holy Father. WYD 2000 is open to young people ages 16 to 30's.
Groups of pilgrims are asked to obtain the details from their arch/dioceses which will receive the necessary registration materials. Registration materials are also available at the NCCB website at www.nccbuscc.org/laity/youth.
