WASHINGTON (March 29, 2000) -- Eleven dioceses have been awarded grants ranging from $250 to $1,000 in this year's National Migration Week Small Grants Program, the U.S. Catholic Conference/Migration and Refugee Services announced today.
MRS Executive Director Mark Franken made the announcement.
National Migration Week was instituted by the Catholic Bishops of the United States in 1980. In the last twenty years, the bishops have tried to utilize the week, usually designated for early January, to raise awareness within Catholic communities of the realities faced by immigrants, migrants and refugees and to promote the need to welcome these newcomers to the United States.
The Small Grants Program was begun to help dioceses, parishes, schools, and other Catholic organizations fund initiatives to combat xenophobia through education, advocacy, and communication. In 1999, MRS awarded thirteen grants, between $500 and $1,000.
