WASHINGTON (May 2, 2000) -- Sister of Charity Maureen Shaughnessy, Assistant Secretary for Catechesis and Leadership Formation for the U.S. Bishops' Department of Education, will receive the 2000 F. Sadlier Dinger Award, May 9, during the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership Annual Meeting and Expo, this year in Houston.

Sister Shaughnessy was selected for the award by William H. Sadlier Inc., in honor of her "years of catechetical efforts -- through personal example, vocation and professional service," said William Sadlier Dinger, president of Sadlier, in announcing the honor.

Previous honorees include Maria Harris, Ph.D. and Gabriel Moran, Ph.D.; Father John Pollard; Jesuit Father Avery Dulles; Dominican Sister Catherine Dooley, Ph.D., and Maryknoll missionary and martyr Sister Ita Ford.

Sister Shaughnessy is a Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth and holds a master's degree in religious education from LaSalle University, Philadelphia, and has done post-graduate studies at Columbia University's Teachers' College. She is co-author of Sadlier Publishing's Mary's Journey Program and was a member of the writing committee for Serving Life & Faith, the U.S. Catholic Conference Department of Education document on adult religious education and the American Catholic community. She frequently speaks on religious education topics. Recent talks have included Wanted: Faith-Filled Adults for the Third Millennium and Evangelization and the Third Millennium.

Sadlier, Inc. this year celebrates its 168th year in the field of educational publishing.
