Bishops' Committee for Pro-life Activities Mourns Death of Cardinal O'Connor

WASHINGTON (May 4, 2000) -- The Bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities and the staff of the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities issued a statement on the death of Cardinal John O'Connor of New York, who died May 3. This is the text of the statement:

"The Bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities and the staff of the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities mourn the loss of one of the greatest pro-life voices ever to bless our country and our church, Cardinal John O'Connor. He gave us his friendship, inspiration and courage, and was beloved not only by those of us who worked closely with him, but by all in the pro-life movement. With his commanding, passionate and compassionate words and presence, he gave the cause of human life a visibility and persuasiveness that will live on. May he rest in peace."
Cardinal O'Connor was chairman of the Bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities from 1989 to 1992. The current chairman is Cardinal William H. Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore.
