Military Services Archbishop Calls for Masses for Russian Submarine Crew

WASHINGTON (August 18, 2000) -- Archbishop Edwin A. O'Brien, Archbishop of the Military Services Archdiocese of the United States, has requested that all Catholic military personnel and their families join in offering Mass this Sunday for the crew of the Russian submarine, the Kursk, and their families. A special Mass will be offered at each of our nation's submarine bases.

The Kursk sank off the northwestern coast of Russia last weekend after sustaining catastrophic damage. Rescue efforts have been attempted throughout the week without success, and the crew is now considerd lost.
