Bishops to Vote on Establishing a Committee on Catechesis

WASHINGTON (October 24, 2000) -- The U.S. bishops will vote to establish a permanent committee on catechesis during their November 13-16 meeting in Washington.

Currently the issues of catechesis are addressed by a Subcommittee on Catechesis of the Bishops' Committee on Education. As proposed, the new committee will be charged with oversight of the entire catechetical mission of the Church in the United States and will link to the present Ad Hoc Committee to Oversee Use of the Catechism. The committee will be staffed by the U.S. bishops' Department of Education, which currently staffs the Catechesis Subcommittee.

If approved, the standing Committee on Catechesis would not become effective until November 2002, following conclusion of the term of the current chair of the Committee on Education and Subcommittee on Catechesis, Bishop Donald D. Wuerl of Pittsburgh.
