Information on Papal Ceremonies Closing Holy Year Released

WASHINGTON (December 15, 2000) -- The Holy See's Pontifical Council for Social Communications released a bulletin on coordination of the worldwide telecasts of the papal ceremonies related to the closing of the Jubilee Year on January 6, 2001.

The ceremony of the Closing of the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, the celebration of Mass and the chanting of the "Te Deum" after Mass, presided over by Pope John Paul II, will take place on Saturday, January 6, Solemnity of the Epiphany, 8:30-10:55 hours UTC (GMT).

The telecast of this ceremony will be accompanied, upon request, by commentaries in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Ukrainian, according to Bulletin No. 10 issued by the Pontifical Council.

Commentary positions will also be available to TV broadcasters at the Braccio di Carlo Magno, Vatican City, upon request to Mr. Corrado Agostini (RAI, Borgo Sant'Angelo 23, Rome; Tel. +39 06 6888 9042, +39 06 6818 2686; Fax++39 06 6888 9193; E-mail c.agostini@rai.it).

In the case of countries outside Europe, to receive the video feed and international sound, television broadcasters should ask their telecommunications provider to contact Telespazio (Mr. Sergio Bernardi, Telex 620424 TSPZRO 1; Fax+39 06 407 1790; Tel. +39 06 4079 3487). A video feed with Spanish commentary is also available through Telespazio.

To receive the required commentary, all participating television broadcasters (except those receiving the complete Spanish service) should ask their telecommunications provider to contact Telecom Italia (Mr. S. Corsaletti, Telex 610101 ITCTX 1; Fax +39 06 3689 4306/4413; Tel. +39 06 3689 4668/4067).

Satellite up-link is offered free to all countries. In the case of developing countries with special difficulties, and on the recommendation of the respective Pontifical representation, the Council will reimburse the satellite down-link costs (but not the costs of the local broadcast).
