WASHINGTON (January 16, 2001) -- Pope John Paul II appointed Monsignor Edward W. Clark, President/Rector of
St. John's Seminary College, Camarillo, California, as Titular Bishop of Gardar and Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles. The Pope named Monsignor Dennis P. O'Neil, pastor of St. Emydius Church, Lynwood, California, as Titular Bishop of Macon and Auxiliary Bishop of San Bernardino.
The Pope accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Patrick J. Sheridan of New York on January 15.
Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, made the announcements.
Edward W. Clark was born in Minneapolis, November 30, 1946.
He attended Our Lady Queen of Angels Seminary, San Fernando, and St. John's Seminary College, and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, May 9, 1972. He earned a doctorate in Sacred Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome, where he studied from 1985 to 1988.
Following ordination, Bishop-designate Clark served in pastoral assignments in the Los Angeles archdiocese. From 1988 to 1990 he was assistant to the Archbishop and Coordinator of Religious Instruction for Secondary Schools.
Bishop-designate Clark was named Rector/President of St. John's Seminary College in 1994. He has served on the archdiocesan theological commission and the Council of Priests.
Dennis O'Neil was born in Fremont, Nebraska, January 16, 1940. He went to elementary and secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, then entered St. John's Seminary College. He was ordained a priest of the Los Angeles archdiocese in 1966.
Msgr. O'Neil served in Los Angeles area parishes from 1966 to 1979, when he undertook a five-year missionary assignment in the diocese of Juneau, Alaska.
Bishop-designate O'Neil became Administrator (later Pastor) of St. Thomas the Apostle parish in Los Angeles in 1984. He served on the archdiocesan clergy personnel board from 1990 to 1998, and was appointed pastor of St. Emydius parish in 1998.
Patrick J. Sheridan was born in New York on March 10, 1922. He studied at St. Joseph Seminary and the University of Chicago and was ordained a priest on March 1, 1947. He was appointed Titular Bishop of Curzola and Auxiliary Bishop of New York on October 30, 1990.
