Streaming Video of Bishops' Meeting to Continue Through Dec. 14

WASHINGTON (November 20, 2001) -- The Department of Communications of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops announced that the streaming video of portions of the proceedings of the recently completed meeting of the USCCB will continue to be available on the Conference Web site through December 14.

The streaming video has been accessible via the Conference Web site (USCCB.ORG) since the Bishops' fall meeting. It includes excerpts from presentations on the floor of the meeting, the full news conferences which were held at the end of the morning and afternoon sessions (except for the Wednesday and Thursday afternoons), and interviews with bishop participants, including Bishop Wilton D. Gregory of Belleville, IL, newly elected President of the USCCB, and Cardinals Francis George, William Keeler, and Bernard Law.

The general meeting of the USCCB was held at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, November 12-15. At the meeting, the Bishops approved a revised Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities, a statement on Africa, and a special message on the current world crisis. They dealt with matters pertaining to the Church's Liturgy, and elected Conference officers and committee chairmen.

"The streaming video project was undertaken to see how effectively Internet technology can provide an opportunity for the Bishops to communicate with the public directly as they deliberate on a wide range of issues facing Church and society," said Msgr. Francis Maniscalco, USCCB Secretary for Communications.

"We have tried to give viewers a sense of the meeting and also to go `behind the scenes' through interviews with Bishops that explain the significance of the actions taken," he said.

While this technology is not yet available to all, Msgr. Maniscalco expressed the hope that those who can make use of it -- especially in Catholic high schools and colleges -- will do so while the video streaming is still on the Web site.

NOTE: In order to see and hear the streaming video, your PC must have a sound card and speakers. For an optimum experience, use the Internet Explorer with Windows Media Player 7 (which is available for a free download on the site; Real Player is also available there).
