Discount Deadline for World Youth Day Registration Extended

WASHINGTON (December 17, 2001) -- The deadline to receive the five percent discount for World Youth Day registration has been extended to January 18.

To receive the discount, payment of $172 for the full package with meals must be sent to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), postmarked no later than January 18. All groups from the United States must list as their billing code "100" and send their payment to the USCCB.

Those who seek to register can go to the USCCB website www.wydusa.org. Registration information and the payment schedule for the various packages can be found on this site.

Over 23,000 pilgrims for the United States have already registered. This is the largest number of U.S. pilgrims ever to attend a World Youth Day outside of WYD-Denver. For WYD-Rome 17,000 traveled from the United States. The number is expected to increase significantly in the next few months as more young adults finalize their plans for Toronto.

Oregon Catholic Press (OCP), an official sponsor of WYD 2002 and the exclusive producer and distributor of the official WYD 2002 CD, has a special fund-raising offer linked to the CD. The CD includes the World Youth Day theme song "Light of the World/Lumiere du Monde," the music to be sung during the Papal Mass and other liturgies, and music from around the world by many Catholic artists. More details are available on the OCP website www.ocp.org/wyd2002.

The WYD 2002 Toronto organizers have published a handbook for those planning to attend. The 141 page book invites young people on a journey of spiritual and catechetical preparation around the eight main themes of World Youth Day. Themes include love and truth; being "salt and light" for our time; Jesus and his disciples; the moral life; the Church; prayer and the sacraments; justice and solidarity; and witnessing to the Gospel. Each theme includes reflections, bible references, information on church tradition and the teachings of John Paul II, and words from young people today. The book is available on the WYD 2002 website www.wyd2002.org.
