WASHINGTON (October 30, 2002) -- The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops announced winners of its 2002 Proclaim Awards honoring excellence in diocesan communications.
The awards were presented October 18, in Los Angeles, during a luncheon at the Catholic Academy of Communications Arts Professionals Assembly (formerly known as Unda-USA). The CCC hosts its annual Proclaim Awards presentation in conjunction with their assembly. This year marks 21 years since the awards program was established.
Thirteen Proclaim awards and seven Certificate of Merits were given to 16 dioceses.
The Diocese of Pittsburgh won two Proclaim Awards. The first award was in the category Special Television Masses. "The Ordination of Priests," which featured the ordination by Bishop Donald Wuerl of Pittsburgh of six men to the priesthood, was carried live via cablecast from St. Paul Cathedral. The second award was in the category TV Public Service Announcements for "Pastoral Resources: Christmas Ad." This PSA was part of a three- year project to enrich parish celebrations in the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter seasons and generate dialogue about effective pastoral ministry to further the growth and renewal of the diocese. Their strategy included inviting people to Church services via a TV ad.
The Archdioceses of New Orleans and Detroit also won two Proclaim Awards each The Archdiocese of New Orleans won in the category of Newspaper-General Excellence for their newspaper the Clarion Herald and also in the category Newspaper- Special Inserts, Features or Series for their insert Kids Clarion, a monthly magazine produced during the nine-month school year. It is a full-color, 16-page magazine style supplement to get more news and features into the Clarion Herald about Catholic elementary school children.
The Archdiocese of Detroit won in the category TV Programs -- Regular Series or Special for "Seeds along the Path: Growing the Church in Detroit." This production recognized Detroit's unique religious heritage. Their second award was in the category of Television Talk Shows, "The Holy Land: Christians in Crisis." Taped on location in Jerusalem and in the archdiocesan studios, the 30-minute interview with Cardinal Adam Maida and moderator Ned McGrath, Director of Communications, was a feature of the show called "Dialogue" and looked back at the historic visit by Pope John Paul II to the Holy Land in March 2000.
Coadjutor Bishop Joseph A. Galante of Dallas and Chairman of the USCCB Communications Committee, presented the Proclaim trophies and Certificates of Merit.
This year"s Proclaim Awards judging was coordinated by Annette Gonzales Taylor, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, Texas. The award entries were jury reviewed under the Chairmanship of Bishop Jose Vasquez, Auxiliary Bishop of Galveston-Houston. The Catholic Communication Campaign produces and supports media projects that promote Gospel values and is funded by an annual collection in Catholic parishes nationwide. The U.S. bishops created the CCC in 1978 and established the Proclaim Awards in 1981.
