USCCB Publishes Booklet on Celebrating the Sacrament Of Penance

WASHINGTON (February 11, 2003) -- Published to coincide with the start of Lent in March 2003, a new booklet Celebrating the Sacrament of Penance: Questions and Answers is now available from USCCB Publishing, the publishing arm of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Celebrating the Sacrament of Penance: Questions and Answers provides answers to some of the frequently asked questions about the Sacrament of Penance, including "Why Do We Need the Sacrament of Penance?" "What Happens in the Sacrament of Penance?" "What are the Different Forms of the Sacrament of Penance?" and "What is "General Absolution?""

The booklet was designed to be used in parishes during preparation for the Sacrament of Penance, as a resource for reflection on the sacrament during particular seasons such as Lent, and as a practical tool to aid penitents as they go to confession.

It also contains a section Going to Confession, aimed primarily at individuals who have not been to confession in some time, and How To Go To Confession, which describes the steps for confession in easy-to-read language. This card can be detached and distributed in churches. It is also sold separately.

The text of the booklet was originally developed as a resource by the Bishops" Committee on the Liturgy and the Subcommittee for the Jubilee Year 2000.

Celebrating the Sacrament of Penance: Questions and Answers (publication number 5-547) comes in packages of 25 for $10.00. Additional copies of the card How to Go To Confession (publication number 5-548) can be purchased separately for $10.00 for 50 cards. To order, contact USCCB Publishing at 800-235-8722, Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., Eastern time.
