WASHINGTON (November 21, 2003) -- Pope John Paul II has named Monsignor Felipe de Jesus Estevez, director of spiritual formation at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach, Florida, as Titular Bishop of Kearney and Auxiliary Bishop of Miami.
Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment.
Felipe de Jesus Estevez was born on February 5, 1946, in Cuba.
His philosophical and theological studies were completed in Montreal, Canada. He received a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome. Ordained a priest May 30, 1970, he carried out his priestly ministry in Honduras until 1975 when he was received into the Archdiocese of Miami. He was incardinated in that archdiocese in 1979.
Msgr. Estevez's assignments in the Archdiocese of Miami have included: faculty member of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, 1975-1977; studies at the Institute of Spirituality at the Gregorian University, 1977-1980; Rector, St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, 1980-1986; pastor of St. Agatha parish, Miami, and Director of Campus Ministry, Florida International University, 1987-2001. He was appointed Spiritual Director of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in 2001.
