WASHINGTON (June 8, 2004) -- Pope John Paul II appointed two Philadelphia archdiocesan priests as Auxiliary Bishops of Philadelphia.
Monsignor Joseph Cistone, 55, archdiocesan Vicar for Administration, was appointed to the Titular See of Case Mediane. Monsignor Joseph McFadden, 57, pastor of St. Joseph parish, Downingtown, Pennsylvania, was named Titular Bishop of Orreomargo.
Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, announced the appointments.
Joseph Cistone was born in Philadelphia, May 18, 1949. He attended Our Lady of Consolation elementary school and Father Judge high school in Philadelphia, and St. Charles Borromeo Seminary from which he received the Master of Divinity degree.
Msgr. Cistone was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on May 17, 1975.
Following ordination, he held numerous pastoral assignments in the archdiocese. Between 1982 and 1987, he served as Advocate, and later Defender of the Bond, in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Tribunal. He was appointed Vicar for Administration in 1998.
Bishop-elect Cistone has been a member of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, the College of Consultors, the Presbyteral Council, the Priest Personnel Board, and the Board of Trustees of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.
Joseph P. McFadden was born in Philadelphia, May 22, 1947. He attended St. Joseph University and St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, where he obtained a Master of Divinity.
Msgr. McFadden was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on May 16, 1981.
He served as Parochial Vicar, St. Laurence parish, Upper Darby, from 1981 to 1982. He was Secretary to Cardinal John Krol from 1982 to 1993. From 1992 to 1993 he was director of archdiocesan pilgrimages to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, and Chaplain of the Serra Club.
Since 1993, Msgr. McFadden has been Adjunct Spiritual Director, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Mentor of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Leadership Institute, and a member of the Archdiocesan Committee for the Ongoing Formation of the Clergy.
Bishop-elect McFadden was appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Downingtown, in 2001.
