WASHINGTON (June 9, 2004) -- The Department of Education of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) announced the creation of the Berard L. Marthaler Scholarship for Educational and Catechetical Leadership. The award was announced June 8 at a celebration honoring Father Marthaler for his thirty years of service as Executive Editor for the catechetical journal The Living Light.
Father Marthaler, a member of the Conventional Franciscans, is an emeritus professor of religious studies at The Catholic University of America.
The scholarship, worth approximately $1000, will enable one person each year to attend the Diocesan Educational/Catechetical Leadership Institute tuition free. The institute is a 5-day training program jointly sponsored by the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership, the National Catholic Educational Association, and the USCCB Department of Education.
According to Dominican Sister Glenn Anne McPhee, USCCB Secretary for Education, "Providing scholarship assistance to an up and coming diocesan educational or catechetical leader seemed an obvious way of honoring Father Marthaler."
"Throughout his career Father Marthaler has worked tirelessly to build strong educational and catechetical leaders for the Church," Sister Glenn Anne continued. "For the last thirty years he has shared his gifts with the USCCB Department of Education by serving as the Executive Editor of The Living Light. Under his dedicated and caring leadership the journal reached several generations of catechists around the world. Articles that appeared in The Living Light are used regularly in leadership formation programs. By establishing this scholarship in his honor, we hope to continue his legacy for years to come."
Information concerning the scholarship and an application process will be made available to dioceses at a later date.
