Baltimore Auxiliary Bishop Bennett Named Bishop In Jamaica

WASHINGTON (July 6, 2004) -— Pope John Paul II has named Baltimore Auxiliary Bishop Gordon D. Bennett, S.J., as Bishop of Mandeville, Jamaica.

Most Reverend Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment.

Gordon Bennett was born in Denver, Colorado, on October 21, 1946, and attended Loyola High School and the Jesuit College of Queen of Peace, Montecito, California. He also studied at Mount St. Michael's, Spokane, Washington, the Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley, California, and Fordham University, New York.

Bishop Bennett made his first vows in 1966 and was ordained a priest on June 14, 1975. He holds master's degrees in theology and education.

He was serving as president of Loyola High School in Los Angeles when he was named Titular Bishop of Nesqually and Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore on December 23, 1997.
