Msgr. Salvatore Matano Named Coadjutor Bishop of Burlington

WASHINGTON(March 3, 2005)—Pope John Paul II has named Monsignor Salvatore R. Matano, a priest of the Diocese of Providence who is currently assigned to the staff of the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, as Coadjutor Bishop of Burlington.

Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, made the announcement.

A Coadjutor Bishop enjoys the right of succession which means he becomes head of the diocese upon the death or retirement of the incumbent bishop.

Most Reverend Kenneth A. Angell is Bishop of Burlington, which comprises the State of Vermont.
