Resignation Of Bishop Foley Of Birmingham Accepted

WASHINGTON (April 7, 2005)—The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has been informed that the resignation of Bishop David E. Foley of Birmingham, Alabama, was accepted last week, prior to the death of Pope John Paul II.

Bishop Foley submitted his resignation in February upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75. Word that Bishop Foley's resignation had been accepted came in a March 30 communication from Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. An announcement was scheduled for today, Thursday, April 7.

David E. Foley was born in Worcester, MA on February 3, 1930. He attended St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington on May 26, 1956. He was appointed Titular Bishop of Ottaba and Auxiliary Bishop of Richmond May 3, 1986. He was appointed Bishop of Birmingham on March 22, 1994 and installed on May 13, 1994.
