WASHINGTON (September 29, 2005)—The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops honored the winners of the 2005 Proclaim Awards for excellence in communications in the dioceses which participate in the CCC.
The awards were presented at a reception for diocesan communication personnel held at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center.
"Our Holy Father was a gifted communicator," noted Ramon Rodriguez, CCC's Director of Development. "As communication professionals, we cherish the legacy that he has left to us. We must continue to strive to find more effective, creative ways to bring the Good News to our brothers and sisters in Christ."
Six Proclaim Awards and 13 Certificates of Merit were presented to representatives of 14 dioceses.
The New Jersey Diocese of Trenton walked away with the top honors, earning three Proclaim Awards for Realfaith TV, a half hour talk show for teens that deals with such issues as depression, abortion, war, and self harm. The show, which premiered in 2002, won the top honor in the Television Talk Show category, the TV Public Service & Paid Announcements category, as well as the Radio Public Service Announcements category.
The Illinois Diocese of Joliet's newspaper, Catholic Explorer, earned Certificates of Merit for general excellence and for Special Inserts, Features or Series. The Minnesota Diocese of St. Cloud won a Certificate of Merit for its radio program, "Conversations"-Waiting with Gabriel, and a Certificate of Merit for its Radio Public Service announcements New Year's Resolution.
Washington State Archdiocese of Seattle took home two awards: a Certificate of Merit for Video Presentation, Long Term Care, and a Certificate of Merit for General Excellence honoring its newspaper, The Catholic Northwest Progress.
Msgr. Francis J. Maniscalco, Director of Communications for the USCCB, presented the Proclaim Trophies and Certificates of Merit.
"For both those who suffered the recent hurricanes' devastation and for us who have been glued to our radios, TVs, and computers, watching relief and recovery activities come to the aid of Gulf Coast residents, this experience demonstrated how important communications are in today's world and that they are not a luxury but a necessity," said Rodriguez.
At the ceremony, Msgr. Maniscalco said that $500,000 has been set aside for grants to the devastated dioceses to help them rebuild their communications ministries.
