Pope Accepts Resignation of Brooklyn Auxiliary Bishop Valero

WASHINGTON (October 27, 2005)—Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Brooklyn Auxiliary Bishop René A. Valero.

Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, made the announcement.

René Arnold Valero was born in New York City, August 15, 1930. He studied at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, New York, and was ordained a priest of the Brooklyn diocese on June 2, 1956. He earned a Master in Social Work at Fordham University in 1962.

Bishop Valero held many pastoral and administrative assignments in the Diocese of Brooklyn, including Director of the Office of Aging, Coordinator of the Hispanic Apostolate, and Director of the Migration office. Appointed Titular Bishop of Vicus Turris and Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn on October 7, 1980, Bishop Valero was ordained November 24, 1980.
