Chicago Archdiocesan Vicar General Named Auxiliary Bishop

WASHINGTON (December 1, 2005)—Pope Benedict XVI has named Father George J. Rassas, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Chicago, as Titular Bishop of Reperi and Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago.

Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment.

George J. Rassas was born May 26, 1942.

He attended Quigley Minor Seminary and the Major Seminary at Mundelein, Illinois. In 1974 he earned a Master in Psychology from Loyola University, Chicago, and in 1984 a Doctorate in Pastoral Theology from Mundelein.

Father Rassas was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 2, 1968.

Following ordination, he held several pastoral and administrative assignments. He was pastor, St. Mary parish, Lake Forest, 1990 to 2004, and has been Chairman of the Presbyteral Council, member, Pastors' Review Board, and a member of the College of Consultors.

Bishop-designate Rassas was named Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago, in 2004.
