Statement on the Introduction of Rep. Davis's Bill to Support Pregnant Women

WASHINGTON (September 20, 2006)— On the occasion of Congressman Davis's (D-TN) press conference to announce the introduction of a bill to provide resources and support to pregnant women, Deirdre McQuade, spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, made this statement:

"Given the staggering 1.3 million abortions in the United States each year, the Pro-Life Secretariat applauds constructive initiatives to support women and their children, both born and unborn. Everyone can agree that no woman should choose abortion due to economic duress. We look forward to working with Congressman Davis to accomplish these goals through initiatives that respect the dignity and lives of both mothers and their children."
