Pope accepts resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Chávez of San Diego

WASHINGTON (June 1, 2007)—Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Gilbert E. Chávez of San Diego.

Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, made the announcement.

Gilbert E. Chávez, was born May 9, 1932, in Ontario, California. He studied at Immaculate Heart Seminary, San Diego, and was ordained a priest of the San Diego diocese on March 19, 1960. Appointed Titular Bishop of Magarmel and Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego on April 9, 1974, he was ordained June 21, 1974.
