The General Secretariat of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) announced that the Bishops have approved submission of Volume I of the Lectionary for Mass to the Vatican for confirmation. They also approved establishment of a new permanent National Collection for the Home Missions.

Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation, for health reasons, of Archbishop Joseph T. Dimino, Ordinary for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, U.S.A. He named Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien, who has been Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese, to succeed him. Archbishop O'Brien is 58.

The U.S. Bishops' Committee on Evangelization has launched a three-year study of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). "The Evangelization Committee wants to look at any obstacles which inquirers may encounter as they begin their journey towards baptism or reception into our church," said Archbishop Michael Sheehan, Chairman of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) Committee on Evangelization.

An official of the U.S. Catholic Conference today welcomed yesterday's announcement that the United States government would participate in international negotiations, known as the Ottawa Process, for the purpose of concluding a treaty to ban antipersonnel landmines. The decision to participate in the Ottawa Process reverses a decision made earlier this year to seek a ban on landmines within the structure of United Nations negotiations.

The U.S. Bishops have applauded the passage of a statement by the Lutheran Church that Catholics and Lutherans share consensus on the basic truths of the Doctrine of Justification, an issue which has divided the two churches since the 16th Century.
