Episcopal Conference of Scandinavia

September 17, 2001

We the Catholic bishops of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden have gathered for our Autumn Conference few days after the indescribable terrorist actions in your country.

It is with feelings of deep sorrow that we write to you to express our horror at what has happened in your country on 11th September.

We join you in our prayers for the dead and their families and friends. We pray also for those who are injured, for those who have been traumatized and for all their families and friends.

While it is difficult to grasp the enormity of what has happened or to understand how the perpetrators of these acts can have so little respect for human life, we hope that the efforts to identify and bring to justice those responsible will to lead to the death or injury of even more innocent people. We pray even for those who carried out these awful actions.

We again assure you of our prayers.

Yours sincerely in Christ

+Gerhard Schwenzer
