National Catholic Evangelization - Programs
Alpha in a Catholic context is renewing Catholic parishes by answering the call to the New Evangelization. Alpha is an effective and affordable method of moving our local parishes from a maintenance mode to a mission Church.
Alpha is effective, affordable and engages the laity so it does not make demands on an over taxed clergy. Alpha is the initial proclamation of the core Gospel message, the kerygma. Alpha brings people to initial conversion or re-version to Jesus Christ.
“Conversion means accepting, by a personal decision, the saving sovereignty of Christ and becoming his disciple.” (Pope John Paul II – Mission of the Redeemer)
Alpha was offered at World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany in 2005 and in Sydney, Australia in 2008.
Alpha benefits the local parish
- Alpha helps to reach the un-churched, lapsed Catholics and those on the fringes of their faith
- Alpha feeds adult formation programs such as RCIA
- Alpha brings many people to full participation in the Sacramental life of the Church
- Alpha builds community and encourages participation in the life of the parish
- Alpha moves people and the Church to look outward – moves us from maintenance to mission. “The person who has been evangelized goes on to evangelize others.” (Pope Paul VI – Evangelization in the Modern World)
Globally, Alpha is being offered in 150 countries and in 100 different languages. Over 44,000 churches are running Alpha courses.

CaFE—Catholic Faith Exploration—is a flexible process for the parish designed to create discipleship, community, and evangelization. Through using the modern media of videos, CaFE helps Catholics get more enthusiastic about their faith. Small faith-sharing groups are formed and Catholics are empowered to make more of a difference in the world around them. CaFE is a practical response to the challenge of the Pope’s call for a New Evangelization. The program is based from the Diocese of Westminster, England, and is currently active in the United Kingdon, Australia, and South Africa. For more information:

The Paulist National Catholic Evangelization Association (PNCEA) provides a long-term parish pastoral planning process that is based on the three goals of "Go and Make Disciples." As pastors, parish leaders, and parishioners develop their future together, they also grow in deepening their commitment to the evangelizing mission of the Church. ENVISION is designed so that parishes may carry out the process on their own or make use of additional resources from PNCEA, including a three-day session for ENVISION Leadership Training.

This ministry of the Paulist National Catholic Evangelization Association is a week-long spiritual experience for parishes seeking a fresh encounter with Jesus Christ and a deeper understanding of the new evangelization. PNCEA Parish Missions are: rooted in a Second Vatican Council vision of the Church; feature preaching and teacing from a team consisting of a Paulist priest and a woman religious or lay woman; through word, sacrament, and fellowship seek to promote an encounter with Christ, which is renewing and transforming; include a special Liturgy of the Word for children; emphasize spiritual renewal and missionary outreach; and provide a parish manual with a detailed preparation plan to help parishes get ready for the mission. The Parish Renewal Project, operated by the St. John Eudes Center, provides the local parish with an opportunity to tailor a renewal program to suit its particular needs. The Project provides a list of options to create a customized week of renewal that might include: a parish mission, a day of staff development, an in-service for Catholic school teachers, a workshop for catechists, training for the pastoral council, and even an afternoon of recollection for the liturgical ministers. There are also a number of other possibilities for the RCIA team, marriage preparation leaders, the committees on evangelization and social action, or for those interested in reaching out to young adults. Available workshops include "Becoming an Evangelizing Parish," "The Parish Today," "A Process for Strategic Planning," and "Youth Evangelization: Methods, Strategies, and Approaches." Parishes in over 80 dioceses have participated in RENEW: Spiritual Renewal for the 21st Century, a thorough spiritual renewal and evangelization process designed for parish life in the 21st century. It incorporates themes suggested by Pope John Paul II for this new millennium and implements his call for a new evangelization.
RENEW offers excellent evangelization materials and thorough trainings that give explicit directions on who are the best prospects for outreach, and how and when to approach them. This is done along with the content of the good news message we share.
The RENEW process provides a direct means of implementing 24 of the specific objectives and 83 of the strategies recommended by the U.S. Bishops in their evangelization document "Go and Make Disciples."
For more information about RENEW, please contact Greg Kremer at 908-769-5400 or email renew@renewintl.orq.

The mission of World Prayernet is to promote the practice of giving undivided time to God each day in prayer as a means toward living life in Christ Jesus by the empowering grace of the Holy Spirit, the principle agent of evangelization. World Prayernet takes the form of a campaign undertaken ecumenically through parishes and congregations to their members.
The goal of World Prayernet is to advance the living, personal encounter with Christ Jesus among believers, drawing them to be "of one heart" with God and with each other; and making them a more perfect expression of faith, hope and love to the world.
The Discover Life in Christ Campaign was initiated within the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a response to the need to become a more evangelized, evangelizing community of faith. Inspired by Pope John Paul's call to deepen Christian unity in the Jubilee year and led by Cardinal Keeler, the initiative became a collaborative project fostered by the Central Maryland Ecumenical Council. With input of pastors, theologians and lay leaders representing Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Evangelical churches, the campaign will be launched at Pentecost 2001.
Each congregation will present teaching on the central importance of a personal prayer relationship with God and invite their members to participate by committing to a dedicated time of daily prayer. Practical campaign materials and teaching resources were developed and tested through a pilot campaign conducted in the Spring of 2000.
