Shreveport GalleryMelkite Eparchy of Newton

An Eastern-rite Catholic diocese is called an eparchy. The Melkite Eparchy, headquartered in a Boston suburb, serves all 27,000 Melkite Catholics in the United States. The Melkites, by and large, are Arabic-speaking immigrants from the Middle East, gathered in 34 parishes and 10 missions spread across the country from New Hampshire to Florida to Wisconsin to California. An eparchy as large as America faces formidable challenges. In order to keep in touch with his dispersed faith community, the bishop is on the road the better part of each year. Moreover, the lack of adequately trained clergy, lay ministers, diocesan and parish staff makes it difficult for Melkite Catholics to live and function as an integral faith community. Arabic-speaking Christians continue to arrive on our shores, cut off from the security of home and in need of the Chruch’s pastoral care.

The Melkite Eparchy has:

  • 26,704 Catholics
  • 44 parishes and missions
  • 38 active priests

2010 Grant
$70,000
