Nearly half of all programs report that formation directors have a role in assessing the spiritual formation of candidates. As the table below shows, however, the percentage is considerably higher among those that indicate that they have a formal spiritual formation assessment process.
Academic faculty, formation faculty, and academic advisers have a role in spiritual formation assessment in about 40 percent of the programs while a formation team has such a role in 30 percent of the programs.

The formation director has a role in assessing the spiritual formation of candidates in more than half of diocesan programs, two-thirds of independent programs, and three-fourths of seminary/school of theology programs.

- Academic advisers are more likely to have a role in assessing the spiritual formation of candidates in programs at academic institutions.
- Peer evaluation is considerably more likely in CPE programs than in other types of programs.
Programs that require formation directors or spiritual directors as part of the program are much more likely to include these individuals in the process for assessing the spiritual formation of candidates.
