Use of Candles in the Liturgy: A Clarification
The Secretariat of the Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy has received a number of inquiries in the last year concerning the Church’s norms governing the use of candles and oil lamps in the liturgy. Many have asked whether oil lamps may be used as substitutes for candles during the celebration of the liturgy.
Holy Days of Obligation
Among the most frequently asked questions of the Liturgy Secretariat are those concerning the obligation to participate in Mass on particular holy days. As a result of recent decisions by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, and in the light of a special indult for celebrating the solemnity of the Ascension in dioceses of the western part of our country, this issue can be very confusing. In addition, liturgical calendars that are published without the review of the Secretariat staff are sometimes in error. A brief description of Holy Days of Obligation is included.
New Format for the BCL Newsletter
Since September 1965, the Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy Newsletter has provided vital liturgical information to Diocesan Offices of Worship, Liturgical Commissions and interested individuals on a monthly basis on behalf of the NCCB Committee on the Liturgy. This month, for the second time in its thirty-two year history, the Newsletter undergoes a change in format.
This new format is designed to provide “side-bar documentation” as well as a clarity and interest of design to improve “readability” of the newsletter. Your suggestions and comments regarding the Newsletter are always welcome.
