  • Stagey adaptation of the Eugene O'Neill drama of greed and lust set in 19th-century New England where the angry son (Anthony Perkins) of a grasping, dour farmer (Burl Ives) falls in love with his father's new wife (Sophia Loren). Directed by Delbert Mann, the dramatic conflict between father, son and stepmother are treated in heavy-handed theatrical fashion that grows wearisome long before the conclusion's moral retribution. Mature themes, including infanticide. A-III (br) 1958

    These movies have been evaluated for artistic merit and moral suitability by the media reviewing division of Catholic News Service. The reviews include the CNS rating, the Motion Picture Association of America rating, and a brief synopsis of the movie.

    A-I -- general patronage;
    A-II -- adults and adolescents;
    A-III -- adults;
    L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. L replaces the previous classification, A-IV.
