Naked and the Dead, The -- Standard World War II tale of U.S. troops battling on a Pacific island under an arrogant commander (Raymond Massey) who sends a quarrelsome aide (Cliff Robertson) on a patrol behind Japanese lines which succeeds, despite a crazed sergeant (Aldo Ray), in getting information resulting in an American victory. Directed by Raoul Walsh from the Norman Mailer novel, the realistic battlefield scenes feature the usual military stereotypes, except for Ray's round-the-bend non-com who shoots prisoners and takes their gold fillings. Wartime violence, a few racial epithets and some sexual innunedo. (A-II) (br) ( 1958 )
