  • Peyton Place -- Trashy soap opera from the Grace Metalious novel about the bedroom affairs of a hypocritical small town in Maine until culminating in the trial of a young woman (Hope Lange) for murdering her stepfather (Arthur Kennedy). Director Mark Robson dresses up the one-note scenario in a glossy production that makes it seem all the more tawdry. Muted treatment of a variety of sexual wrongdoing, stylized violence and a veiled reference to abortion. (A-III) (br) ( 1957 )
