  • Postman Always Rings Twice, The -- Gritty crime tale from James M. Cain's novel in which a tough drifter (John Garfield) takes a job in a roadside diner, falls for the unhappy wife (Lana Turner) of its good-natured owner (Cecil Kellaway) whom they determine to murder, then face the law and retribution. Directed by Tay Garnett, the sexual attraction motivating the horrendous crime is effectively depicted without any explicit visuals, but the murder's aftermath grows increasingly contrived and emotionally hollow. Stylized violence, including cold-blooded murder, an adulterous relationship and much sexual innuendo. (A-III) (br) ( 1946 )
