  • Prisoner of Zenda, The -- Grand romantic adventure from the Anthony Hope novel of a mythical Central European kingdom where a vacationing Englishman (Ronald Colman) saves the throne of his distant royal cousin (also Colman) who's been kidnapped by a villainous stepbrother (Raymond Massey) and his chief henchman (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.). Directed by John Cromwell, the late 19th century setting nicely suits the tale of loyalty and honor amid court intrigues, desperate forays and the bittersweet romance of commoner and princess (Madeleine Carroll). Some stylized violence and romantic complications. (A-I) (br) ( 1937 )
