  • Star Is Born, A -- Sudsy tale in which a small-town lass (Janet Gaynor) sets out to make good in Hollywood but gets nowhere until a top star (Fredric March) helps her become a hit in his next picture but after tbey marry, her career rises while his ends in alcoholism, with tragic results. Directed by William A. Wellman, the star-crossed romance never developes beyond the wife's blind love for her self-destructive mate, though its sharply satiric picture of the realities behind the Hollywood tinsel of the studio era is still worth seeing. Stylized violence including a suicide, the ravages of alcoholism and sexual innuendo. (A-III) (br) ( 1937 )

    The classifications are as follows:

    A-I -- general patronage;
    A-II -- adults and adolescents;
    A-III -- adults;
    L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. L replaces the previous classification, A-IV.
    O -- morally offensive.

    Note: Some movies previously were designated A-IV. Older films with this classification should be regarded as classified L.
