  • Sun Comes Up, The -- Sentimental story in which a widowed concert singer (Jeanette MacDonald) mourns the death of her young son by brooding alone in a backwoods cabin where her boy's dog, Lassie, attracts an orphaned lad (Claude Jarman, Jr.) greatly in need of a mother's love. Directed by Richard Thorpe from a story by Marjorie Kinnan Rawling, Lassie is as appealing as ever but what steals the show is the country setting and the wry humor of its homespun characters. Good family fare. (A-I) (br) ( 1949 )
