  • Three Musketeers, The -- Serviceable version of Alexandre Dumas' adventure saga in which provincial youth D'Artagnan (Walter Abel) joins Parisian musketeers Athos (Paul Lukas), Porthos (Maroni Olson) and Aramis (Onslow Stevens) in saving the French throne from the intrigues of Cardinal Richelieu (Nigel de Brulier) and his agents (Ian Keith and Margot Grahame). Directed by Rowland V. Lee, the plot is streamlined to its essential conflict of fidelity vs. treachery, with some fanciful swordplay, chaste romance (Heather Angel) and a game performance by the miscast Abel. Stylized violence and romantic folly. (A-II) (br) ( 1935 )
