  • Young Lions, The -- Flawed adaptation of Irwin Shaw's novel about three soldiers in World War II France -- a brash Broadway entertainer afraid he's a coward (Dean Martin), an American Jew plagued by home-grown anti-Semites (Montgomery Clift) and a German officer disillusioned by Nazi inhumanity (Marlon Brando). Director Edward Dmytryk plods through a fitfully interesting but overlong script whose good intentions are largely undone by Martin's inept performance and Clift's limp portrayal of victim-turned-hero, though Brando commands attention as an ambiguous idealist. Wartime violence and sexual situations. (A-III) (br) ( 1958 )

    These movies have been evaluated for artistic merit and moral suitability by the media reviewing division of Catholic News Service. The reviews include the CNS rating, the Motion Picture Association of America rating, and a brief synopsis of the movie.

    A-I -- general patronage;
    A-II -- adults and adolescents;
    A-III -- adults;
    L -- limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. L replaces the previous classification, A-IV.
