Intercessions for Life

February 2003

February 2nd -- PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

For all newborn children:
that the love and care of Mary and Joseph
might inspire and strengthen the hearts
of all who are called to care for them;
We pray to the Lord:

February 9th -- FIFTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
For biomedical researchers:
that a love for the sacred gift of life
might inspire and guide them
to be good stewards of the mysteries of life;
We pray to the Lord:

February 16th -- SIXTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

For all Bishops:
that their love for the sheep
whom the world has forgotten
might strengthen and form us;
We pray to the Lord:

February 23rd -- SEVENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

For all prisoners,
and especially those who wait on death row:
that God might give us the merciful grace
to love and sustain them as men and women
created in the image of God;
We pray to the Lord:

"God is the future of the human person and of the world. If humanity loses the meaning of God, it will close itself to the future and inevitably lose the perspective of its pilgrim journey in time. Why birth, why death? Why sacrifice, why suffering? To these questions, Christianity offers a satisfying answer. For this reason, Christ is the hope of humanity. He is the true meaning of our present, because he is our sure future."

—Pope John Paul II (Angelus, December 1, 2002)

Roe v. Wade promised women a freedom to participate more fully in society, but it took their children and broke their hearts. Countless women have suffered physically, emotionally, and spiritually because of abortion; many have even lost their lives.
A Matter of the Heart, statement on the Thirtieth Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, November 12, 2002

Many in the last generation fought for legal abortion; but more today know that women deserve better, and so fight for true freedom for women.

Quoting John Paul II, Archbishop Martino concluded that old age is a "time of grace, which is an invitation to be united with a deeper love to Christ's saving mystery and to participate more profoundly in his plan of salvation. The Church looks with love and trust upon you elderly people, dedicating herself to encouraging the fulfillment of a human, social and spiritual context in which every person can live this important stage of his life fully and with dignity."
—Archbishop Martino's statement at the United nations, new York, Oct. 9, 2002

The god of economics, reason and progress demanded first...the sacrifice of family moral values, the adoption of an anti-birth selfishness and now a globalization...by an economy that does not accept any moral norm...It is absurd to continue affirming that the number of human beings is the cause of poverty, misery and indigence when we all know with scientific certainty that these results from the reigning 'social injustice' that literally makes the rich richer and the poor poorer.
—Colombian Bishop Jorge Jimenez Carvajal, President of Latin American Bishops' Council.
