Intercessions for Life

March 2002

March 3rd -- THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

For a spirit of repentance,
that we might turn from the selfishness
which brings death to defenseless children,
and be reborn to the love of the gift of life;
We pray to the Lord:

March 10th -- FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

For all who are paralyzed by sin,
and especially for those whose profession or lifestyle,
violates the right to life of their littlest brothers and sisters.
For compassion, repentance and a love for the truth;
We pray to the Lord:

March 17th -- FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

For our governor, our president and our senators;
that God might place deep within their hearts
a love for every human being
from conception to natural death;
We pray to the Lord:

March 24th -- PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD'S PASSION

For all who suffer,
and especially for those who are forgotten,
alone, sick or dying,
that Christ might teach us to cherish them;
We pray to the Lord:

March 31st -- EASTER SUNDAY RESURRECTION OF THE LORD
That by the glorious resurrection of Christ,
our Lord and Savior,
we may receive the grace and strength
to defend the Gospel of Life;
We pray to the Lord:

Bulletin Briefs

March 2002

Therapeutic cloning, the production of human ... embryos to be used in the treatment of certain illnesses and then destroyed, must be addressed and prohibited. This exploitation of human beings ... retains all its ethical repugnance as an even more serious offense against human dignity and the right to life, since it involves human beings (embryos) who are created in order to be destroyed.

–Archbishop Renato Martino, Address to the U.N. International Convention Against the Reproductive Cloning of Human Beings, Nov. 19, 2001

The principle that human beings (embryos) should not be used as an object or "sacrificed" is always valid, even when others might benefit from that practice.
–Archbishop Renato Martino, Address to the U.N. International Convention Against the Reproductive Cloning of Human Beings, Nov. 19, 2001

Some [in the U.S. Senate] have offered alternative legislation ... [which] does not ban cloning, but rather prevents the further development of the cloned human being by requiring its destruction before implantation in a woman's womb. It would allow unlimited use of cloning to produce thousands or even millions of human embryos in the laboratory – while creating a new government mandate that none of these embryos be allowed to survive. By passing such misguided and ineffective legislation, Congress for the first time would not only allow the destruction of an entire class of human beings but require such destruction.
–Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, Letter to U.S. Senators, Dec. 14, 2001

Cloning is not wrong because cloned human beings would lack human dignity – it is wrong because they have human dignity and are being brought into the world in a way that fails to respect that dignity.
–Richard Doerflinger, Testimony to Senate subcommittee, May 2, 2001

We must remember that it is morally wrong and irresponsible to make human clones, not to be a human clone. The innocent victim of cloning should not receive a government-sanctioned death penalty simply for the crime of existing.
–Richard Doerflinger, Testimony to Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Science, Technology and Space, May 2, 2001
