A Pastoral Message on Growing Older Within the Faith Community
The U.S. bishops invite older persons, their families, and their faith communities to develop new initiatives that encourage the participation of older persons in society and in the Church. Recognizing the social, economic, and spiritual implications of this rapidly growing age group, the bishops encourage a fresh perspective that embraces the gift of aging. Special words are offered for (1) older people themselves, (2) caregivers, (3) the parish faith community—pastors, staff, volunteers, and all parishioners, and (4) younger adults. The publication also includes reflection and discussion questions, current statistics, and helpful suggestions.

"Honoring older people involves a threefold duty: welcoming them, helping them and making good use of their qualities." In this new letter, Pope John Paul II, "as an older person myself," encourages older people of all languages and cultures to see "every season of our lives as a gift" and to "put their time, talents, and experience at the service of others." He asks younger people to respect and learn from their elders, and he advocates increased opportunities for social programs that benefit older persons.

An Occasion of Grace
The devastation of AIDS has affected countless lives in the United States. In health care facilities and outreach programs across the nation, Catholics are offering their hands and hearts to persons living with AIDS. From a home for HIV-positive mothers in Los Angeles to a support group in New York, Living with AIDS introduces us to some of these people: a teen group that uses dramatizations to educate peers about AIDS prevention; parishioners who do household chores for neighbors living with AIDS; a hemophiliac, who lost his wife and most of his family to AIDS; and members of a South Dakota parish dealing with the denial and discrimination surrounding the death of a friend by AIDS. The video demonstrates how individuals can make a difference in healing the physical, emotional, and spiritual scars brought on by the AIDS epidemic. From the U.S. bishops' Catholic Communication Campaign.

This inspiring presentation focuses on the efforts of two men, during the last year of their lives, to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in liturgy and church life. Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, the late archbishop of Chicago, called for a conference on inclusion in which Fr. Henri Nouwen, the late Dutch theologian and author, served as the keynote speaker. Containing excerpts from that conference, the video was developed by Pathways Awareness Foundation in partnership with the Archdiocese of Chicago. With introduction by Msgr. Kenneth Vilo, president of the Catholic Church Extension Society. A 24-page Idea Guide is included.

The U.S. bishops renew the church’s call to minister to the needs of the disabled in the United States. The bishops recognize the need in striving for a deeper understanding of both the pain and the potential of our neighbors who are blind, deaf, mentally retarded, emotionally impaired, who have special learning problems, or who suffer from single or multiple physical disabilities- all of whose disability may set apart. The bishops also call us to reexamine our attitudes toward our disabled brothers and sisters in order to promote their well-being, acting with the sense of justice and compassion that the Lord so clearly desires.
